Guitar humidity advice is usually sold rather than explained, and the honest answer for a lot of owners is "no". Two questions settle it.
Question 1 — is the guitar solid wood or laminate?
A solid top is a single piece of wood, and it expands and contracts with humidity across its width. That is also why it sounds better: it is free to vibrate.
A laminate top is thin layers glued with alternating grain direction, like plywood. That construction is dimensionally stable — the layers restrain each other — which is why laminate guitars survive climates that damage solid ones, and why they sound less responsive.
How to tell: look at the edge of the soundhole. On a solid top you see continuous end grain running through the thickness. On a laminate you can usually see distinct layers, sometimes with a darker line between them. If in doubt, check the maker's specification for your model — it is nearly always stated.
Solid-body electric? Far less affected. Humidity extremes still cause sharp fret ends as the fingerboard shrinks across its width, but a slab of solid body wood has nothing to sink or crack the way an acoustic top does.
Question 2 — does your home actually get dry?
This is the question people skip, and it is the one that decides whether anything is needed.
The risk period is winter with heating on. Cold outside air holds very little moisture; heating it raises its temperature without adding water, so indoor relative humidity falls. In a well-heated home in a cold climate it can sit in the twenties for months.
In a mild, damp climate with modest heating, indoor humidity may never drop far enough to matter. Same guitar, entirely different answer.
Buy the hygrometer first
A small digital hygrometer costs very little and tells you what is actually happening. Put it where the guitar lives — in the case if it lives in a case, in the room if it lives on a stand — and read it over a few weeks in winter.

The symptoms of a guitar that is too dry
In rough order of appearance:
- Sharp fret ends. The fingerboard shrinks across its width; the frets do not. They start catching your hand. This is usually the first sign and it is easy to feel.
- The action drops and the strings buzz. The top sinks slightly, lowering the bridge and with it the strings.
- The top looks flat or slightly concave where it should have a gentle arch.
- A crack. Usually in the top, often running from the bridge or along the grain. This is a repair.
The first three reverse when humidity is restored. The fourth does not.
Two questions
Solid or laminate, and does your home get dry
If the answer to either is no, you almost certainly need nothing. Buy a hygrometer before you buy anything else.
