The four gifts that are almost never wrong
A clip-on tuner. Works on acoustic, electric, classical, bass, ukulele and violin. Costs less than a bottle of wine. If they already own one, a second one lives in the other case — nobody has ever been annoyed by a spare tuner. The tuner roundup has the picks.
A pick variety pack. Twelve picks in six published thicknesses. Guitarists lose picks continuously and are perpetually curious about gauges they have not tried. There is no wrong guitar for a pick.
A wall hanger or a stand. The gift that changes behavior: an instrument within arm's reach gets played daily. String Swing publishes a 15 lb rating and a lifetime structural warranty on its hanger, so this is also a gift that outlasts the relationship it came from.
A care kit. Nobody buys this for themselves in the first year and everybody needs it. Choose one whose maker publishes which finishes it is safe on — MusicNomad does, most do not.
What to avoid unless you know their guitar
- Strings. Gauge is personal and acoustic, electric and nylon sets are not interchangeable. The wrong set is unusable, not merely disappointing.
- A case or gig bag. Depends entirely on body shape. A dreadnought case does not fit a concert-body acoustic.
- A capo — mostly safe, with one exception: classical guitars have flat fretboards and need a classical capo. If in doubt, ask, or buy something else.
- Anything with a brand logo on it as the main feature. Guitarists have opinions about brands and you are unlikely to know theirs.
Budget bands
Gifts under $50 covers the tuner, picks, care kit, strap and stand territory — which is where the genuinely useful gifts live. Gifts under $100 reaches headphone amps and better capos and cases. Stocking stuffers is the small-and-cheap end, where consumables win.
Prices on this site come from a live feed and are stamped with the date we checked. Where we hold no verified price, the page says "check price" rather than showing a number we remembered — which matters more than usual when you are budgeting for a gift.
